Veterinary Extension

Fulfilling the land-grant mission by interpreting knowledge and research so Ohioans can apply scientifically based information to better their lives, businesses, and communities.

The Ohio State University Extension, part of Ohio's land-grant institution, serves all 88 counties with a focus on Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4-H Youth Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Community Development. Established in 1974, the Veterinary Extension Unit continues to adapt and confront challenges, ensuring that valuable information reaches those who need it.

The Veterinary Extension Unit is located within the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and is part of the Agriculture and Natural Resources program. Extension Veterinarians in the department serve as State Extension Specialists as well as faculty members of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Funding for these positions is shared between The Ohio State University Extension (usually 65% FTE or more) and the college or the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. Unlike Veterinary Extension at  other universities, State Specialists in veterinary medicine at Ohio State hold tenure-track positions in the department and are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and professional service as are other tenure-track faculty in the college. Extension education (teaching) programs are the principal Extension focus as opposed to diagnostic service.

Ohio State University Extension creates opportunities for people to explore how science-based knowledge can improve social, economic and environmental conditions.

Ohio State University Extension embraces human diversity and is committed to ensuring that all research and related educational programs are available to clientele on a nondiscriminatory basis without regard to age, ancestry, color, disability, gender identity or expression, genetic information, HIV/AIDS status, military status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status. This statement is in accordance with United States Civil Rights Laws and the USDA.
