Animal Influenza Ecology and Epidemiology Research Program

Dr. Bowman earned his BS Agr, MS, DVM, and PhD—all from Ohio State—before returning to his alma mater to advance research and education. He is an expert on zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases at the intersection of animal and human health. He also holds a courtesy appointment in the College of Public Health’s Division of Epidemiology.

Professional Training and Experience

  • PhD, The Ohio State University, Veterinary Medicine
  • DVM, The Ohio State University, Veterinary Medicine
  • MS, The Ohio State University, Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Bowman’s research focuses on zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on the ecology and transmission of influenza A viruses and SARS-CoV-2 at the animal–human interface. He investigates high-consequence pathogens that circulate in swine, cattle, poultry, and wildlife, employing a One Health approach that integrates field epidemiology, molecular diagnostics, and genomic surveillance. His work has contributed to the early detection of novel influenza strains, improved biosecurity practices, and the development of outbreak response strategies for both endemic and foreign animal diseases.

Notably, his team was among the first to document sustained influenza A virus transmission in exhibition swine, reshaping understanding of how animal populations contribute to pandemic risk. Dr. Bowman also leads studies to evaluate vaccines, disease elimination methods, and enhan ce surveillance systems in partnership with state and federal agencies.

Before his academic career, Bowman practiced veterinary medicine in food-animal production, an experience that continues to inform his applied research and his role as a liaison to the swine industry. His work supports rural communities, public health preparedness, and the agricultural economy by advancing science-based solutions for real-world biosecurity challenges.
