Thomas Wittum Appointed to Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

Thomas Wittum, PhD, professor of epidemiology in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, was recently appointed to the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB) by Xavier Becerra, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. He will serve a four-year term as a voting member of the Council with status as a special Government employee.
The PACCARB provides advice, information, and recommendations directly to the HHS Secretary in support of the U.S. national action plan for combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The council supports and evaluates U.S. Government activities focused on fighting AMR in human, animal and environmental health using a One Health approach.
Wittum is one of the leaders of Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine's Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and is a co-director of the AMR thematic program within Ohio State's Infectious Diseases Institute, which has been recognized as an International Reference Center for AMR by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Wittum leads a research program investigating the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
