Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine advances in U.S. News & World Report rankings

The College of Veterinary Medicine, Ohio’s only college of veterinary medicine, ranked #3 out of 33 US veterinary schools accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education in the most recent U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate and Professional School rankings, advancing from 4th in the previous (2019) rankings. A perennial top-five ranked veterinary college for nearly two decades, Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1885, is one of the nation's oldest and largest veterinary colleges. With alumni in all 50 states and 40 countries, the college is known for its world-renowned history and tradition of excellence and innovation in education, research, outreach, and patient care programs.

As the college works towards its ambition to Be The Model® comprehensive college of veterinary medicine in the world, a number of factors have enhanced our reputation as an outstanding institution:

•    Each year, the college admits 165 outstanding veterinary students per class with diverse backgrounds, experiences and attributes from throughout Ohio, across the country (typically 25 or more states), and around the globe (a few countries), offering a comprehensive graduate program in Veterinary and Comparative Medicine as well as a unique Master’s degree in Veterinary Public Health, in partnership with the College of Public Health.

•    Applications to the college’s DVM program have increased by over 115% over the last eight years.

•    A new outcomes-based curriculum was launched in the fall of 2022 with early and frequent hands-on learning that leads graduating highly competent, confident, and career-ready veterinarians who can practice broadly across the spectrum of care.

•    91% of our students receive one or more job offers at the time of graduation (compared to 89% nationally) and 99% report successful employment within six months of graduation.

•    The college is a national leader in the spectrum of care philosophy in both clinical and academic settings, including opening the first-of-its-kind Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic, where student doctors take the lead in caring for patients and serving clients.

•    The college’s Veterinary Health System is the state’s and region’s only academic comprehensive tertiary referral center, providing cutting-edge care to over 80,000 canine, feline, equine, and farm animal patients annually in our six hospitals and farms across Ohio. 

•    Ohio State veterinary medicine faculty, staff, and students closely collaborate with partners across the six other health science colleges, all located on the main campus, including Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, and Public Health, along with other colleges like the Colleges of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Social Work to address complex societal issues.

•    Through a One Health approach to comparative biomedical and agricultural research, the college is advancing animal and human health, as well as enhancing food production, protection, and safety.

•    Well-being and inclusivity initiatives are woven throughout the college’s new four-year curriculum and embedded into the workday to support not only veterinary students but also graduate students, interns, residents, faculty, and staff and to serve as a model for other veterinary colleges and the profession.

•    Since 2017, the college has been recognized as a Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award Winner for six consecutive years by Insights into Diversity magazine for our ongoing work fostering a diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging culture. 

•    Over the last eight years, the college has more than quadrupled its endowment value from $25M to more than $105M.
 
•    The college has prioritized fundraising efforts for scholarships and has increased philanthropic scholarships by 730% over the past eight years from $370,000 to nearly $3.1 million.
