Alecia Naugle, DVM, PHD, named chair of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine

With more than two decades of public practice in veterinary preventive medicine, Dr. Naugle brings national animal health and food safety program expertise to the role.

Alecia Naugle, DVM, PhD, will join the College of Veterinary Medicine as Chair of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine on January 1, 2025. Dr. Naugle received her DVM from Ohio State in 1998 and completed her PhD in 2003.

In her previous role as Associate Deputy Administrator/Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer for Veterinary Services in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), she co-led a team of approximately 1800 employees, including more than 700 veterinarians, across the United States. Dr. Naugle provided executive-level leadership in a complex organizational environment by balancing long-term program goals with those of changing administrations while fostering employee engagement.

"The Chair of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine provides important leadership and guidance not only to the department, but also to the college, university and our community," said Rustin Moore, DVM, PhD, dean off the College of Veterinary Medicine, "Dr. Naugle brings a proven track record of executive leadership and more than two decades of public practice in veterinary preventive medicine to the department. As an alumna of the college, we are excited to welcome Dr. Naugle back home and look forward to her leadership, contributions, and impact to the department, college, and the broader veterinary profession and animal health industries."

Dr. Naugle brings national animal health and food safety program expertise to the role. Throughout her career she has worked with livestock and poultry industries to improve the health of animals and safety of their products to ensure marketability across the nation and the globe. She has led response efforts to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks. She has collaborated on various One Health efforts and responses within USDA and across the Federal government. 

Dr. Naugle shares, “I am thrilled to be returning to Ohio State and look forward to sharing my experiences with veterinary and graduate students, providing leadership within the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, and interacting with Ohio’s livestock and poultry producers to continue to support animal agriculture.”
