Programs for Veterinarians

Continuing Education

The Office of Continuing Education in the college has offered conventional continuing education courses since its first conference for veterinarians in 1926. Now, the office conducts approximately 30 to 35 on-site courses annually for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, breeders and owners. In addition to on-site courses, online continuing education became available in February 2009 thanks in part to a course development grant awarded by the university's Office of Continuing Education.

Partnerships with the State of Ohio and Community Organizations

Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections

The college has had a partnership with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections for more than 60 years to assure Ohio's justice system that the livestock on correction facility farms - raised to provide meals to the inmates - will have high-quality management and veterinary care. In addition, dog handler training programs allow inmates to train dogs that will become service animals for disabled persons, and the SAFE Haven for Pets program provides temporary emergency foster care for pets owned by victims of domestic abuse.

Shelters and Zoos

A partnership with the Capital Area Humane Society allows senior veterinary students the opportunity to gain experience examining healthy dogs and cats, as well as performing spay and neuter procedures. Other partnerships include arrangements with the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the Wilds, and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, among others.

Veterinary Outreach Program

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine has partnered with LifeCare Alliance to provide wellness care for pets belonging to elderly or homebound residents in Franklin County. The program is under the direction of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine faculty members, Drs. Larry Hill and Linda Lord. Click here to learn more about the Veterinary Outreach Program

They can ask questions, and learn about career opportunities and attending college. Students then tour labs and participate in a variety of demonstrations.
