Outreach and Engagement

Building on the university’s legacy as a land-grant institution, the College of Veterinary Medicine serves Ohio through programs that protects the agricultural economy and preserves the human-animal bond. As a leader in the Global One Health movement, the college has expanded its reach to impact the health and sustainability of animals, people and the environment. As a goal area in the college’s Be The Model® strategic plan, the college works to create outreach and engagement programs that 

  • Promote science-based practices to the animal agricultural community
  • Serve as a leader in global health and conservation initiatives
  • Grow interest in veterinary medicine and science careers

Through a variety of partnerships and programs, the college works to protect the health and well-being of animals, people and the ecosystem.

Global One Health Initiative (GOHi)

More than 20 veterinary faculty are part of GOHi, which uses a One Health approach to bring together multiple disciplines working globally (local, national and international) to address the spread of disease, promote health and emphasize the connection among humans, animals and the environment.

Supporting Global Veterinary Education and Readiness

Through partnerships with veterinary schools in Ethiopia and SE Asia the college provides educational support to promote World Organisation for Animal Health Day 1 competencies.

Protecting the Agricultural Economy and Food Supply

Veterinary medicine and research play an essential role in supporting the agricultural economy and ensuring a safe and health food supply.

Ohio State’s Extension program protects the animal agricultural industry through emergency response planning and training and farm-based biosecurity measures, and promotes livestock and poultry production, health and welfare.

Antimicrobial Stewardship

The Buckeye Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (Buckeye ASP) supports outreach and education for veterinarians throughout the state while other training programs in the community help farmers make better decisions about antibiotic use.

Shelter Medicine Program

Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine was one of the first programs to partner with local shelters. Our partnership with Columbus Humane allows fourth year students to complete a clinical rotation at the shelter – providing essential veterinary care, as well as gaining experience performing spay and neuter surgery, preparing thousands of pets to find their forever home.

Honoring the Bond

This innovative program supports clients through the serious illness, injury, or death of a pet by providing consultation and grief education.

Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic

In an effort to graduate competent and confident, practice ready veterinarians, the college established a free-standing primary care clinic where students independently practice as care providers, under the support and supervision of primary care veterinarians.
