At a reception on Thursday, June 11, 2026, the College of Veterinary Medicine celebrated the careers and contributions of Dr. Patrick Green and Dr. Michael Oglesbee as they retire at the end of this month. Through decades of service, scholarship, leadership and mentorship, they have advanced scientific discovery, strengthened our college’s national and international reputation, and inspired generations of students, trainees and colleagues.
Patrick Green, PhD, concludes a nearly 30-year Ohio State career distinguished by pioneering research and academic leadership. An internationally recognized expert in retrovirology with more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Green’s work has advanced understanding of human T-cell leukemia viruses and their role in cancer, helping to inform the development of new therapeutics and vaccines. During his tenure at Ohio State, he served as the inaugural Robert H. Rainier Endowed Chair in Industrial Veterinary Medicine and Research and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.
Widely recognized as a global leader in the structure and function of HTLV proteins, Dr. Green directed the Center for Retrovirus Research and served as Program Leader, Associate Director for Basic Sciences, and senior advisor to Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. His career has been marked by continuous NIH-funded research, election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology, and a longstanding commitment to education and mentorship. Having guided more than 50 trainees, he helped shape the careers of scientists who now contribute to institutions and industries around the world. In recognition of his achievements, he was named both a Distinguished University Scholar and a Distinguished University Professor, the university’s highest faculty honor.
Michael Oglesbee, DVM, PhD, DACVP, earned both his DVM and PhD from The Ohio State University and retires following a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades. A professor of virology and veterinary neuropathology, director of the Infectious Diseases Institute, director of the college’s Veterinary Scholar Summer Research Program and former chair of the Department of Veterinary Biosciences, Dr. Oglesbee provided visionary leadership while advancing interdisciplinary approaches to some of the most pressing challenges in infectious disease research.
His pioneering investigations of viral neurovirulence and heat shock proteins transformed understanding of host-pathogen interactions and immune responses, contributing foundational discoveries that continue to influence the field. A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Distinguished Member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, Dr. Oglesbee is equally admired for his dedication to mentorship, education and service. Through his guidance and leadership, he has influenced generations of scientists, veterinarians, and physician-scientists while advancing animal and human health.
The contributions of Drs. Green and Oglesbee have strengthened the College of Veterinary Medicine, expanded the frontiers of scientific discovery and improved countless lives through research, education and mentorship. Their collective impact on Ohio State and the broader biomedical community will endure for years to come.
