The position honors the life and legacy of Tom Mack, DVM ’61, a distinguished alumnus and lifelong advocate for veterinary medicine and global health. Like all our endowed chairs and professors, this is an honorific appointment. Importantly, this endowed position provides funding that covers salary, with the cost savings realized being used to support other positions within the college.

She is also a dedicated educator and mentor, having guided nearly 50 graduate and professional students in One Health-related research and training. Her leadership has helped shape global veterinary education and align international curricula with World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) standards.

Berrian exemplifies academic and service excellence, leading curriculum and program development in Global One Health and advancing international veterinary education. She has played a key role on the CVM Global Engagement Program Steering Committee and contributed to academic veterinary standards through her work with the American Association of Veterinary Medical College’s Climate Change Working Group.  She currently serves on the Steering Committee for the North American One Health University Network where she focuses on advancing One Health education across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

According to Rustin Moore, DVM, PhD, Rita Jean Wolfe Endowed Dean in the College of Veterinary Medicine, "Dr. Berrian's appointment reflects not only her outstanding achievements but also commitment to positioning the College of Veterinary Medicine as a leader in One Health education, research, and policy engagement. Please join me in congratulating her on this well-deserved recognition for her continued outstanding service and contributions to the college."

Berrian reflected on the honor of receiving the inaugural Dr. Tom Mack Chair for Global One Health, “Dr. Tom Mack, I believe, understood the value of training veterinarians as global citizens; he realized the full societal role of veterinarians and advocated for our profession on the global stage. I am honored to carry his legacy forward by fostering a Global One Health community of practice; developing engaged global citizens through training, discovery, and outreach; and providing visionary programmatic leadership and resource stewardship.”
