Residencies

The Ohio State University Departments of Veterinary Biosciences, Clinical Sciences and Preventive Medicine all provide post-DVM residency training programs with advanced and intensive training in the principles and practice of specialty veterinary medicine.

Residents share in the responsibility of the faculty to provide exceptional educational experiences for our veterinary students and outstanding clinical services to pet owners. A major element of the clinical residency training program is delivering outstanding veterinary care to our patients and professional service to animal owners and referring DVMs.

Specialty Residencies

The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine has many different specialty areas in which students may concentrate their residency program. Information on each individual specialty can be found below.

Anesthesia

This residency provides advanced clinical training and specialization in applied veterinary pharmacology, anesthesia, and perioperative pain management under the supervision of four ACVAA board-certified anesthesiologists.
Behavioral Medicine

The residency goals are developing proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic methods, gaining clinical teaching experience with veterinary students, designing and publishing research, communicating findings to other veterinarians and exposure to related clinical services.
Cardiology & Interventional Medicine

This residency is ACVIM-approved and supervised by faculty members of the Cardiology & Interventional Medicine Service. The training program is designed to prepare the resident for a career in either clinical academic medicine or in specialty cardiology practice.
Combined Pathology/PhD Graduate Training Program

Trainees in the OSU Combined Pathology Training/PhD Graduate Program simultaneously engage in veterinary anatomic/clinical pathology training and rigorous dissertation research, culminating in a PhD and ACVP board eligibility in a 5 to 6-year time frame.
Combined Pathology/PhD Graduate Training Program - Anatomic Pathology

Research training for anatomic pathology residents is designed to provide experience with molecular biology, virology, oncology, biochemistry, immunohistochemistry, gnotobiology, cell culture, and quantitative histomorphometry in investigation of the pathogenesis of disease.
Combined Pathology/PhD Graduate Training Program - Clinical Pathology

The objective of the clinical pathology program is to provide training in clinical chemistry, cytology, hematology, immunology, surgical pathology and molecular techniques. Trainees are directly involved in the teaching and diagnostic services of the clinical pathology laboratories.
Dermatology & Otology

The residency program in Dermatology and Otology provides advanced clinical training and specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of skin and ear diseases of small and large animals under the supervision of three board-certified specialists.
Diagnostic Imaging & Radiology

The resident will receive training in all of the subspecialty areas of veterinary radiology including routine and special procedures in small and large animal diagnostic radiology, diagnostic ultrasound, nuclear medicine, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
Equine Medicine

This three-year residency provides intensive training in the principles and practices of internal medicine and an introduction to clinical research leading to a Master of Science degree.
Equine Surgery

The residency provides advanced clinical training and specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic diseases of small and large animals under the supervision of 2-3 board-certified specialists.
Food Animal Medicine & Surgery

The residency provides advanced clinical training and specialization in the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of diseases and disorders of the food and fiber animal species
Laboratory Animal Medicine

This ACLAM certified training program is designed to provide trainees with broad exposure to all facets of laboratory animal medicine for a multitude of careers in biomedical research.
Medical Oncology

The residency provides advanced clinical training and specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in small animals under the supervision of over 40 board-certified specialists.
Ophthalmology

The residency provides advanced clinical training and specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic diseases of small and large animals under the supervision of 2-3 board-certified specialists.
Neurology & Neurosurgery

The residency program provides advanced clinical training and specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of neurologic diseases of small and large animals under the supervision of 3 board-certified specialists.
Radiation Oncology

The residency program provides advanced clinical training and specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of oncologic diseases of small and large animals (with a focus on those cancers managed with radiation therapy) under the supervision of board-certified Radiation Oncologists.
Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care

The residency program is designed to satisfy the criteria necessary to qualify for Board Certification, and to prepare the resident for successful completion of the American College of Emergency/Critical Care Certification Examination.
Small Animal Internal Medicine

The residency program is designed to satisfy the criteria necessary to qualify for Board Certification and to prepare the resident for successful completion of the Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialty Certification Examination
Small Animal Surgery

The residency program will develop comprehensive, state-of-the-art expertise and clinical proficiency in small animal surgery and satisfy the criteria necessary to qualify for Board Certification.
Theriogenology & Reproductive Medicine

The program provides advanced Theriogenology training and preparation and anticipation of the resident applying for and taking the Board examination for The American College of Theriogenologists.
Veterinary Public Health Residency

The Ohio State University Veterinary Public Health (VPH) Residency is one of only two programs certified by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM) in the United States. The VPH Residency is a specialized training program for veterinarians, building the next generation public health workforce.
Zoo & Wildlife Conservation Medicine & Ecosystem Health

This cooperative program provides trainees with coursework, a research program, intensively and extensively managed zoological medicine training and field experience emphasizing a One Health approach to the study of non-domestic animal health.
