Puppy Kindergarten

Probably the single most important thing you can do to help your puppy grow up to be a friendly, confident, reliable and happy family member is to socialize your puppy now.

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine offers puppy socialization classes for puppies under 13 weeks of age and their owners. This age is a very critical developmental stage for puppies. The lessons they learn during this critical socialization period will affect them for life. Thus, it is important to teach puppies to be comfortable with a variety of people, places, sights and sounds in a safe and controlled manner.

Puppy kindergarten serves to socialize new puppies so that they may learn to handle stress and new situations in order to raise them into well-adjusted adult dogs. Additionally, the class will provide owner education in all aspects of canine development and behavior problem prevention and resolution. Owners can utilize this early experience to create a confident, comfortable and loving member of their household and community.

When and Where

Puppy classes are held on Wednesday evenings. There is a class from 5:00pm, which registrants will have access to as recordings. The series includes an orientation (without puppies) and four, 35-45 minute puppy socialization classes. Virtual class will be held unless the University of Veterinary Medical Center is closed.

In keeping with best COVID-19 practices, puppy classes are currently virtual.

Please email us directly for recommendations on facilities and trainers in your area if your puppy is unable to attend classes with us.

The first class is for owners, you do not need your puppy vaccinated for the first remote class. The next remote classes will begin May 27th at 6:30pm and June 3rd at 5:00pm.

Who Can Attend

All puppies under 13 weeks of age (at the beginning of class) are encouraged to join puppy kindergarten. Anyone in the household can attend virtual sessions or view the videos. You are welcome to include children above age 3 (with an additional supervising adult) in virtual class. To insure that all puppies are healthy and protected from infectious disease, each puppy must be properly vaccinated and examined by a veterinarian at least 7 days before the start of class. A veterinary health form for proof of exam and vaccination, to be filled out by a veterinarian, can be obtained by email request or by downloading the form online. Due to the challenge in obtaining in-person signatures, veterinary records can be emailed in lieu of a veterinary signature.
