The story of VMC patient Dennis the dachshund and his dramatic weight loss was featured May 11 on the Steve Harvey Show. Dennis weighed 56 pounds when Brooke Burton rescued him from a relative. He has lost 44 pounds, and endured three skin resection surgeries to become the happy, energetic dog he is today.
His new owner was inspired to create a fund at Ohio State's Veterinary Medical Center to support better health in overweight dogs. "Dennis' Legacy" will eventually allow eligible pet owners to receive reduced costs for recommended food, rehabilitation and exercise therapy, and consultation with veterinary nurtritionist Dr. Valerie Parker.
To donate to Dennis' Legacy fund, click here. Checks can also be mailed to Development, 1900 Coffey Road, Columbus, OH, 43210, payable to The Ohio State University Foundation with "315098" in the memo line.
Clients who wish to use the Veterinary Medical Center's nurtrition services must seek an appointment with Dr. Parker, and can schedule by calling 614-292-3551.
Clients who meet the criteria for the fund could receive support for up to half of their bill.
