Thomas R. Mack, BS, DVM

Dr. Mack completed his BS (1957) and DVM (1961) at The Ohio State University. Following graduation, he entered private practice where he owned and operated Bayshore Animal Hospital in San Mateo California, for over 35 years until 2005. He has been honored by the American Animal Hospital Association and named “Outstanding Practitioner of the Year”. Dr. Mack is distinguished not only by his large and valued animal practice serving the extended community of the San Mateo area; but also for his dedication and service to his professional and local communities in extensive selfless ways for decades.

Dr. Mack has assisted and led key professional and community organizations. He was integrally involved with the founding and continual support of Alliance for Smiles, an organization providing comprehensive treatment for cleft lip and palate anomalies in under-served areas of the world. Due to the volunteer and financial support of Dr. Mack, as well as his service on the Board of Directors, Alliance for Smiles has helped over 6000 children.

Dr. Mack became interested in supporting Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine Global One Health Initiative (GOHi) after learning about GOHi in the Ohio State Alumni Magazine – specifically around GOHi’s capacity building and rabies prevention efforts in Ethiopia. In his partnership with GOHi as a Global One Health team member, he has:

  • Advised and mentored GOHi students;
  • Traveled to Africa on Global One Health mission trip and actively participated in GOHi workshops;
  • Participated in the field site visit to the University of Gondar, discussing rabies prevention and control projects among others;
  • Encourages other alumni to support GOHi and other college initiatives; and
  • Provided financial support to One Health initiatives to sustain capacity building efforts.

Dr. Mack has also served as an avid supporter of organized veterinary medicine. He is a Life Member of the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), has served on the CVMA Board of Governors, as the Director and Vice President of the California Veterinary Medical Foundation, and on numerous committees and task forces, including the Public Relations, Political Action, Legislative, and Disaster Preparedness Committees.  He has also served the city of San Mateo as Mayor, a member of City Council and Library Board of Trustees, and as a Chair for the Council of Cities Dr. Mack embodies Ohio State’s values, applying his skills and resources to the betterment of his community, both professionally and globally.
