Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that occurs after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic life threatening event such as combat, natural disasters, serious accidents, or physical or sexual assault. While most survivors return to a pre-trauma level of functioning after an event, there are also survivors who develop stress reactions such as nightmares and flashbacks. They may also develop symptoms such as trouble sleeping, hypervigilance, feeling emotionally numb, and irritability.
After surviving a traumatic event, many people have PTSD-like symptoms at first, such as being unable to stop thinking about what's happened. Fear, anxiety, anger, depression, guilt are also common feelings associated with the trauma incident. These symptoms are not uncommon after a traumatic event and for most, they will go away over time. Healing from that event is dependent on many factors such as the type of event, the person’s biological make-up, psychological capabilities, learned social behaviors, and the circumstances around that event. There is no good way to define when a person should be healed from a traumatic event. However, according to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition(DSM- 5), in order for PTSD to be diagnosed, one or more of the symptoms such as those noted above must be present after one month from the traumatic event. If a person experiences lingering or intensifying feelings and/or symptoms after one month, so much that it interferes with their quality of life, a person should seek treatment for PTSD.
