Michigan Humane Society


Expose student to numerous programs associated with a large urban humane society, including veterinary practice (surgery, medicine and population health), cruelty investigations, animal behavior and modification, and shelter/adoption programs.


Institutional Resources

Students are afforded an opportunity to work alongside a team of approximately 15 staff veterinarians at our three veterinary hospitals.

Sterilize and perform other surgical procedures on MHS animals prior to adoption. Provide preventative health care and other medical services to client animals under supervision of staff veterinarians. Work with animal behaviorist to learn training and behavioral modification techniques. Work with cruelty investigation unit to gain understanding of animal cruelty recognition and intervention.

Student Supervision

While in clinical practice, veterinary access is continuous. Approximately 2/3 of externship is in clinical practice, the remainder is in behavioral and cruelty divisions.
