The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is partnering with Midmark Corporation in Versailles, Ohio to increase education in periodontal disease and pet dental services for veterinary students. Through course electives, this continued education will inform students of the dental treatments available, and teach them about the importance of preventive care as well as the treatment of periodontal disease. Eighty percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have periodontal disease, yet few veterinary students take a dental elective, and even fewer veterinarians offer dental services.
Midmark, which has long supplied The Ohio State University Medical Center and College of Dentistry with equipment, partnered with the veterinary college to create a state-of-the art dental clinic and help provide future veterinarians with proficient dental education.
“Our philosophy is…if we help clinicians provide better, more efficient patient care, equipment is only part of it,” said Jamie Renner, Midmark market manager. “Education is key. We can manufacture a significant product, but if clinicians don’t know how to use it or understand the importance of dentistry, it won’t benefit anyone.”
The partnership with Midmark began at the 2009 Midwest Veterinary Conference, sponsored by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, and grew in strength when the VMC began extensive renovations in 2010, which included an expanded dental clinic.
“There were several design meetings, and we sought a way to partner in the space,” Renner said. “We knew our equipment could help students, and we knew students could help us through immersive research.”
Partnering in the space meant providing a pair of dental delivery systems – high-speed drills and polishers, similar to what human dentistry uses, as well as dental seating, and a freestanding wet treatment table with a drain. All told, Midmark donated more than $65,000 worth of new dental equipment and even paid to have it installed.
"We are truly appreciative of our partnership with Midmark and their support of our programs," said Dr. Rustin Moore, Chair, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and associate dean, Clinical and Outreach Programs. "Our state-of-the-art dental facility and equipment made possible through Midmark's generosity enable us to optimally serve our clients through enhanced dental care of their pets while benefitting our students' education and clinical experience."
Midmark hopes the partnership will continue long into the future. “Our headquarters is based in Ohio, and OSU is in our backyard, so we want to support each other,” Renner said. “Veterinary dentistry is a major focus of our animal health division.”
