College Pelotonia participants raise thousands for cancer research

Faculty, staff and students rode, raised money and volunteered with the inaugural 2009 Pelotonia bike tour. Pelotonia is an annual grass roots bike tour with the goal of raising money for innovative and life saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Riders could choose from one day routes of 25 miles, 50 miles or 100 miles; or the two-day trek of 180 miles.

Molly the Pony Visited Ohio State

Molly the Pony, one of the world's only prosthesis-wearing ponies, visited the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine August 6 from 4:00 to 8 p.m. Visitors had the chance to hear the presentation "It's All About Molly" at 5 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the Wexner Auditorium in the Veterinary Medicine Academic Building (VMAB) by Dr. Rustin Moore, Bud and Marilyn Jenne Professor and chair of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Molly was on the lawn outside for visitors to meet her and her owner, Kaye Harris, before and after Dr. Moore's presentation.

Two Evening CE Series Offered

Small Animal Surgery and Small Animal Medicine

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine is now offering two evening continuing education series. The Small Animal Surgery Series will introduce cutting edge techniques such as minimally invasive surgery, interventional radiology, and canine physical rehabilitation, and their responsible clinicians, to the referring veterinarian. Topics in soft tissue surgery, orthopedics and neurosurgery will also be addressed. The series will be instructed by faculty from Cardiology, Neurology and Small Animal Surgery services.

Dr. Tony Buffington, professor of veterinary clinical sciences at Ohio State, and his research team have discovered a biomarker in cats and humans that may lead to better treatments for some chronic pain syndromes.

Shelter Outreach Services of Ohio Received a Donation

The Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association raised $716 during Vet Olympics 2009 to benefit Shelter Outreach Services of Ohio. SOS of Ohio is a non-profit veterinary clinic that provides affordable, high-quality spay and neuter services to shelters and low-income families in Greater Columbus.

Provost Joe Alutto to Give Dean Search Update

Ohio State Provost Joseph A. Alutto will be giving an important update regarding the search for the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30.

The update will take place in the Veterinary Medical Center Auditorium. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

New Classes Added to CE Offerings

Three new online continuing education courses will be made available in July   


  • Tooth root abscesses in camelids

This course will cover basic knowledge of tooth root abscesses, one of the most common problems affecting llamas and alpacas. The course will be presented by Andrew Niehaus, DVM, MS and will be available July 8.
