Wittum Lab receives continued CDC funding for research

Dr. Thomas Wittum, Professor and Chair in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, and his research team have received a 1-year $693,598 grant for September 2018-19 from the Center for Disease Control to support their project entitled “Preventing the dissemination of CRE from healthcare facilities into surface waters in the US."

CRE, which stands for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, are a family of germs that are difficult to treat because they have high levels of resistance to antibiotics. Some CRE bacteria have become treatment-resistant to most drugs. Infections with these germs are very difficult to treat as a result.
