Title IX Protection Changes

Earlier this year, the Biden administration signed an executive order (EO 14021) emphasizing that Title IX protections include gender identity and sexual orientation. The EO comes in the wake of the 2020 US Supreme Court ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, which found that Title VII’s prohibition on sex discrimination included discrimination that was based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

The executive order makes it clear that anyone in educational environments receiving federal financial assistance is protected from discrimination on the basis of sex. This means that faculty, staff, students in the professional degree program, residents, interns and graduate students who identify as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community are protected under Title IX. Information about the change can be found on the US Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights website.

Ohio State is committed to equity and eliminating discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct. To learn more, connect with support resources, or make a report, please contact OIE at: equity@osu.edu; 614-247-5838; or visit www.equity.osu.edu. Please know that Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine (OSU-CVM) values and is uncompromising in our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB). We define diversity in the broadest sense and stand with the AAVMC in support of the Equality Act, a bill that would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation and gender identity.

In June, PrideVMC published its Gender Identity Bill of Rights. The document is a useful reference on basic expectations for the respect and inclusion of transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals in any environment, including OSU-CVM.

The OSU-CVM firmly believes that diversity in our community makes us stronger. As such, we are committed to advancing DEIB in all forms and for all people.

We want to acknowledge and thank all members of our college community for their commitment to embracing and enhancing diversity and for doing your part in fostering a climate and culture of equity, inclusion and belonging.
