For the third year in a row, The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a recipient of the 2019 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education! We are proud to be recognized with other colleges in the health sciences family, including the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Optometry. This year, Ohio State was the only university to have four health sciences colleges recognized.
Diversity and Inclusion is a foundational principle of our Be The Model™ strategic plan and it’s incorporated into every goal area. The college was selected for this award because of our ongoing work to foster a culture of diversity and inclusion with specific recognition of three highlighted areas:
• The creation of Community of Inclusion Affinity Groups that act as sites of community engagement and formation that support an inclusive community in the college.
• The launch of Be Well, our health and wellbeing initiative to engage faculty, staff and students in evidence-based wellbeing programming, outcome assessments, and programming specific to academic and healthcare professionals.
• The innovative use of the Veterinary Clinical and Professional Skills Center to transform the core curriculum to create stand-alone courses that provide structure for hand-on skills training.
This award is a national honor recognizing U.S. health professions schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. We are especially honored to be selected since 2017.
The College will be featured along with 42 other recipients in the December 2019 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. While we know we have much more to do to become the model working and learning environment that supports inclusive diversity in all we do, we are honored by this recognition of our efforts to date. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the work that has led to this recognition, and more importantly, to help nurture diversity and inclusion in our college.
