Class of 2019 White Coat Ceremony

Event date:
Sunday, April 29, 2018 - 1:00pm

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine cordially invites the Class of 2019, family and friends to the:

2018 White Coat Ceremony - Class of 2019
Sunday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The Ohio Union
1739 North High Street
Archie M. Griffin Grand Ball Room, 2nd Floor

The Ceremony

The White Coat Ceremony provides students a symbolic transition from the didactic to the clinical phase of veterinary education.  The white coat is a symbol of medical professionalism and the ceremony signifies the beginning of your clinical apprenticeship to sustain and restore the health of animals and people.

Guest Coater

We want to encourage you to invite someone (must be a Doctor, DVM or PhD) that has served as a mentor to you to present your coat to you, as this will make the ceremony a more memorable experience for everyone.  We encourage you to invite a DVM mentor, but we do understand that some of you have already invited a Non-DVM to coat you.  This will be the last year we will honor this request.  You will need to provide us information about your coater when you RSVP.   If you do not have a mentor to coat you, Dr. Rustin Moore will do so.

(Please note that for Oath and Hooding which occurs at graduation, ONLY an Ohio State faculty member or adjunct faculty member can hood you).

Coaters should arrive at 11:00 a.m. but no later than 11:30 a.m.  We strongly encourage you to invite your coater to our reception at 11:00 a.m.  Food will be provided.  We will also provide an invitation for you to send to your “guest coater.”

We can’t stress the importance of students being on time for this event.  Because you will be seated in alphabetic order, if one person is late or does not show up, it impacts the entire group.  We strongly encourage everyone to attend the reception starting at 11:00 a.m. in the Performance Hall at the Ohio Union.   Food will be provided.  We will also take a class picture and do a walk through for the day.  The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Students should arrive at the Ohio Union (Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom, 2nd floor) no later than 11:00 a.m.

Invitation for Guests

There is no limit to the number of guests that may attend nor are tickets required.  Seating begins at 12:45 pm for family and friends.  Doors will open at that time.  Family and friends that arrive prior to 12:45 pm are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the Ohio Union or campus.

Because the White Coat Ceremony is formal, people are dressed up professionally - which means “business" or "business-casual" attire – you will see a lot of shirts and ties and business dresses in the room (but no tuxedos or evening gowns). In the past, students have worn dresses or blouses/skirts, and dressy shirts and ties.  No jeans or tennis shoes please.

This occasion is made for photographs!  Be sure to have your cameras ready!  You will have opportunities to take photos before and after the ceremony.  Our photographer will take a picture of each student on stage receiving their white coat.  He will also take candid photos after the ceremony.  These pictures will be made available to students.

After the ceremony, punch and cookies will be available. Many students plan to have dinner with their families after the reception.  So, discussing and making dinner plans with your party in advance can be helpful.
