  • Vastly increased e-mail quota: Over 10 times the quota of OSU e-mail
  • Safer Computing
    • Integrated anti-virus scanning
    • Integrated junk-mail protection
  • Access to integrated e-mail, calendar, contact, and task management utilities

Who is eligible for a CVM e-mail account?

  • CVM e-mail accounts (firstletter_firstname [dot] lastname [at] cvm [dot] osu [dot] edu) are available to college-affiliated faculty, staff, lecturers, and graduate students. At this time, undergraduate students enrolled in and or taking courses the College of Veterinary program are not eligible to receive a CVM e-mail account.

How do I establish a CVM e-mail account?

  • Faculty, staff, and students must request a CVM network account, which includes a CVM e-mail account. A completed and signed account request form can be obtained in 0086 Veterinary Medical Center (VE) or from your department's human resource contact. Once an account request form is received and processed by VIS, a printed account form with your CVM username and password will be delivered to your department's office.

How is my CVM e-mail account different than my OSU e-mail account?

  • The two e-mail accounts are completely separate. Your CVM e-mail account (first_letter_of_first_name [dot] lastname [at] cvm [dot] osu [dot] edu) is hosted on systems operated by CVM Veterinary Information Systems (VIS), while your OSU e-mail account (lastname [dot] # [at] osu [dot] edu) is hosted on systems operated by the OSU Office of Information Technology (OIT). The two are separate accounts, each with different credentials.
  • We recommend that you forward your OSU e-mail account to your CVM e-mail account.
Key features and benefits of your CVM e-mail account include:
    • Vastly increased e-mail quota (10X quota of OSU e-mail)
    • Safer computing
      • Integrated anti-virus scanning
      • Integrated junk-mail protection
    • Access to integrated e-mail, calendar, contact, and task management
    • Access to college-wide address book
    • One-to-one personalized support

Does the CVM e-mail system offer integrated calendaring and contacts?

  • Yes. The CVM e-mail system is built upon Microsoft Exchange. Using Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and 2007 for Windows XP and Vista or Microsoft Entourage for Mac OS X, you have access to a fully integrated e-mail, calendaring, contacts, and task management system.

How do I access my CVM e-mail if I do not use Microsoft Outlook or Entourage?

For ease of use, adding the above URL(s) to your trusted sites in your browser security settings is recommended.

What are the CVM e-mail restrictions or quota allocations?

  • Quota allocations are set as follows:
    • Soft limit (warn only, mail will still deliver): 490 MB
    • Hard limit (mail cannot be sent): 500 MB
    • Hard limit (maximum critical, mail cannot be sent or received): 510 MB

Why are there size limits on my email account?

  • VIS limits the size of your inbox to preserve the integrity of your email. Though actual limits can be set higher on the server, when a .pst file become corrupt, Microsoft does not have a utility that can recover emails if the .pst is above 2.0 GB in size. Other reasons include but are not limited to Denial of Service Attacks, network utilization, single instance storage, cost impact, and performance impact.

I'm getting a message that my mailbox has exceeded size limits. What should I do?

  • Start by deleting items that no longer need. Also make sure that you have emptied the Deleted Items and Junk E-mail folders.

You may also need to use the AutoArchive feature of Outlook.

How do I update my access to e-mail distribution lists such as VetAll?

  • Contact vishelp [at] cvm [dot] osu [dot] edu for distribution list requests.

What is the idle activity timeout when using Outlook Web Access (webmail)?

  • When you log into webmail, you are presented with the Security option of "Public or shared computer" and "Private computer". The timeout for "Public" is 10 minutes of inactivity. This includes starting to compose a message and not doing anything else in webmail. Webmail does not automatically save drafts of messages as Outlook does. After 10 minutes, you will automatically be logged out and messages you started will be lost.

If you are on a trusted computer, then select the Security option "Private computer". This will give you 1 hour of idle time before automatically logging you out.

Does the CVM provide e-mail forwarding for my CVM e-mail account after I retire, graduate, or voluntarily leave the college?

  • Yes, if you meet the above criteria once you depart from the College of Veterinary Medicine, your e-mail account will be forwarded 30 days to the account of your choice for 30 days. After 30 days, account forwarding will cease and your account will be permanently disabled.

Does OSU provide e-mail forwarding for my OSU e-mail account (lastname [dot] # [at] osu [dot] edu) after I graduate or leave the university?

  • Yes. Free lifetime e-mail forwarding service (LEFS) for your lastname [dot] # [at] osu [dot] edu e-mail account is available to all OSU graduates and retirees. If you do not meet the above criteria, your OSU e-mail account is typically accessible until the end of the academic quarter after you leave the university, at which time OIT purges "non-affiliated" accounts.
