Behavior and Animal Welfare

Dr. Naomi Botheras

Dr. Botheras, animal welfare Extension specialist, Department of Animal Sciences, came to Ohio State after completing her PhD at the University of Melbourne, in Australia, where she studied farm animal behavior and welfare. At Dr. Botheras works with dairy, swine and poultry producers and scientists in the area of farm animal welfare. She is also involved in research in this area. She is a member of the Dairy Working Group, and also develops educational materials related to food animal welfare.

Dr. Candace Croney

Dr. Candace Croney, associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, brings invaluable expertise to Ohio State with her research in animal bioethics and animal behavior. Her research and teaching efforts focus on exploring the relationship between animal mental states and animal welfare, the effects of the environment on animals, public perceptions of animal agriculture, and human-animal interactions. Beginning in fall 2009, she will be teaching a required course for first-year students in animal behavior. Dr. Croney received her bachelor's degree from Rutgers University and her master's and PhD degrees from Pennsylvania State University.

Companion Animal

Dr. Meghan E. Herron  

Dr. Herron, clinical instructor of Behavioral Medicine, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, is the head of the Behavioral Medicine Clinic, which offers behavioral services for companion pets with issues such as separation anxiety, aggression, inappropriate elimination, phobias, compulsive behaviors and cognitive dysfunction.

Food Animal Production

Dr. Maurice L. Eastridge

Dr. Eastridge, professor, Department of Animal Sciences, specializes in ruminant nutrition and primarily focuses on the extent to which fiber affects animal performance along with milk production. He is also concerned with the production of conjugated linoleic acid in mil and optimizing feeding practices. 

Dr. Joseph S. Hogan

Dr. Hogan, associate chair and professor, Department of Animal Sciences, specializes in bovine mastitis. He is interested in mastitis in dairy cows and both the associated somatic cell and bacteria counts in milk.

Dr. Michael S. Lilburn 

Dr. Lilburn, professor, Department of Animal Sciences, focuses on research in avian nutrition and embryonic development.

Dr. Steven J. Moeller

Dr. Moeller, associate professor, Department of Animal Sciences, specializes in swine genetics, production management and mortality composting. His research is focused in muscle quality and ultrasonic evaluation of fat and muscle in swine.

Food Safety

Dr. Wondwossen Gebreyes

Dr. Gebreyes, associate professor, Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, wrote a paper with colleagues titled, "Seroprevalence of Trichinella, Toxoplasma, and Salmonella in Antimicrobial-Free and Conventional Swine Production Systems," which was published in Foodborne Pathogens and Disease and referenced in a New York Times editorial. The paper examines bacteria and parasites in free-range pork and pork produced in intensive production systems.
