Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego

Program Purpose: To provide a high quality clinical experience for fourth year veterinary students in a 24 hour multi-specialty referral and emergency practice with an emphasis on high quality technically advanced clinical practice. In addition we have a strong didactic program for interns and externs.

Externships are typically from one to four weeks.

Services offered at VSH are internal medicine, emergency medicine/critical care, surgery, neurology/neurosurgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, ophthalmology, dermatology, radiology and dentistry. There is also a pharmacist on site. VSH has a unique partnership with UC Davis where they share a portion of our facility and they provide cardiology, hemodialysis, nutrition and behavior services. VSH has 18 specialists, 6 residents and 10 interns. The case load at VSH is high and students will have the opportunity to see well over one hundred cases in a week. There are generally anywhere from 40 to 70 hospitalized patients.

Equipment at VSH includes digital radiography, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, scintigraphy, multiple endoscopes, linear accelerator, multifunction monitors, blood pressure machines, ventilator, and full service commercial laboratory. Please visit our web site (www.vshsd.com) for further information about the hospital.

Extern Responsibilities: Externs are paired with the interns as they rotate through the services. Externs are expected to dress professionally and arrive no later than 8:30AM for morning rounds. Externs will participate in receiving, writing SOAP’s, patient care. Externs may have the opportunity to perform some minor procedures and they will observe a wide variety of procedures and surgery. Externs will participate in all didactic activities which include lectures given by the specialist twice weekly, weekly radiology rounds, and monthly grand rounds. Externs are expected to be present from 8:30AM to 5:00PM. Given that we are a 24/7 hospital there are plenty of opportunities for learning outside of the regular hours and externs are welcome to stay longer hours or work on weekends if they would like to.
Drs. on site 24 hrs a day. Supervised by specialists on the individual services, residents and interns. Specialists on site from 8:30am usually until at least 9:00pm.
