USDA APHIS Raleigh Office

The
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (APHIS) Raleigh Office
(ARO) includes a hub for Veterinary Services’ (VS) National Import
Export Services (NIES) and Surveillance, Preparedness, and Response
Services (SPRS) personnel. These employees retain subject matter
expertise in APHIS disease control programs, livestock commodity groups,
emergency response, and technical issues related to international
trade.
An
externship at the ARO allows students to job shadow APHIS-Veterinary
Services employees to learn about their career paths, learn about their
current APHIS programs, and assist with real-time APHIS issues. Students
can expect to be assigned work, and provided the resources to conduct
it. Student work will be reviewed by ARO staff prior to being
incorporated into project deliverables. Work is primarily conducted in a
professional office setting, but can include field experiences with the
SPRS District 1 staff, if and as they are available. Overall, student
externs at the ARO will explore VS domestic disease program policy and
management and international trade policies and management. Students
will be expected to improve their understanding of how VS’ domestic and
international policies are developed, implemented, and communicated.
VS
personnel at the ARO include NIES’ National Director for Service
Centers, National Director for Animal Import Centers, import/export
coordinators, and risk analysts; epidemiologists for SPRS’ Cattle Health
Center, Avian, Swine & Aquatic Animal Health Center, and Sheep,
Goat, Cervid & Equine Health Center; and SPRS District 1 field
staff.
