We offer 4-8 week externships to fourth year veterinary students. Complete immersion in zoological medicine (medical, surgical, dental, preventative medicine care of amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, fish; post-mortem exams, nutrition, exhibit design). The facility includes the following equipment; X-ray machines, endoscopes, ultrasound, dental machine, microscopes, electro-surgery, do all avian/reptile hematology in-house. Emergencies are usually limited to business hours but days can be long.
Dr. Christopher Hanley is a boarded Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Medicine and completed an exotics internship at the University of Georgia and zoological medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Zoo, and International Crane Foundation.
Students are expected to be active participants in the department and will be expected to complete a project or report during their time.
Work day is generally 9-10 hours and there is a vet on site or available every day. Directed time with vet is generally between 4-7 hours a day, but depends on the caseload.
