College of Veterinary Medicine

Two week externship in a general small animal practice setting. We see medical and surgical cases of a wide variety. We also see a smattering of exotics and pocket pets, and Dr. Eisenberg does occasional farm calls. The extern would be able to see patients with direct DVM supervision, both in the exam room and as inpatients (medical and surgical). This should be a chance for the extern to polish exam and communication skills and to gain some experience with sedation, anesthesia, general surgery and radiology.

Relatively complete small library, journals and internet access. We also have Idexx consultation specialists available by phone.

• Participate in a schedule of office calls and surgery that will afford a full spectrum of experiences.
• Be available for emergency calls that would be of value as learning experiences (C-sections, traumas, etc.).
• Maintain client and patient confidentiality. Keep appropriate records and utilize support staff appropriately.

I'm not sure I understand what direct and free access entails - my expectation is that the extern will be participating with the veterinarian in the usual business of the clinic. This will be at least 40 hours per week, although more is available if the student wishes. There will be some time for discussion outside of practice time - probably 3-5 hours per week.
