Assist doctor's with physical examinations, diagnostic evaluations and formulating therapuetic plans for all patients seen. Assist surgeons in surgery or assist with anesthesia. Assist in monitoring and treating critical cases both during the day and overnight. Students are expected to assist the emergency veterinarians with patients both in the hospital and on the farm. Students are strongly encouraged to focus on anatomy and physiology in order to more accurately interpret results of diagnostic procedures and formulate therapeutic plans. The amount of hands-on clinical experience (IV catheterization, nasogastric intubation, rectal examination, dentistry, etc) is determined on a case-by-case and student-by-student basis.
Students supervised by board certified veterinarians approximately 10hrs per day, and general practice veterinarians approximately 14-24hrs per day (depending upon caseload). Students have access to multiple veterinarians 24hrs per day, 7 days per week.
