South Wilton Veterinary Group and the Avian and Exotic Pet Referral Center is a six doctor practice owned by an ABVP board certified avian specialist. SWVG provides medical and surgical care for a wide range of species including cats, dogs, privately owned companion birds, as well as exotic pets including ferrets, lagomorphs, small rodents, and reptiles, and injured or sick wildlife. A one year internship and a 2 week externship is offered by the South Wilton Veterinary Group. This opportunity is intended to provide a broad experience in avian and exotic medicine and surgery. The student will work under the supervision of an experienced staff veterinarian. A typical day starts at 8 am and goes until approximately 6 or 7 pm.
Responsibilities of the student would include: seeing healthy and sick avian and exotic appointments, assisting and performing medical and surgical procedures of avian and exotic species, participating in daily hospital rounds, participating in weekly radiology rounds with staff veterinarians, managing the care/treatment of all sick or injured wildlife, writing up daily treatment protocols for each hospitalized patient, seeing after-hour avian emergencies on a rotating schedule, writing up and presenting case reports on a monthly basis.
All day - potentially as much as 11 hrs per day and Mon-Saturday...ie,will always have a vet working when a student extern is present. They'd also be free to "shadow" any avian emergencies that we see.
