Perry Veterinary Clinic, PLLC, (PVC) a 22 veterinarian mixed animal practice located in Western New York, operates 3 VFAP accredited companion animal clinics and a large ambulatory service. PVC offers opportunities for externship in dairy production medicine through the year. Externship are tailored to meet the interest and needs of the individual student’s academic program and ability level.
A PVC partner will be assigned as a primary mentor for the Companion Animal Medicine externship. The mentor will work with the student to design an experience that meets the needs of the student. Students will have exposure to all aspects of practice life including veterinary activities, case studies, producer meetings, billing, inventory management, and customer relations. Depending on the duration of the externship, special projects or research initiatives may be arranged.

Responsibilities
Companion Animal Medicine will include:
- Medical Cases – medical work-up and development of treatment plans, daily rounding, in-house lab work
- Surgical Cases – TPR, patient prep, catheter placement, calculated drug and fluid doses, set-up and perform imaging exams, set-up monitoring equipment, surgical closures, endoscopic procedures
- Wellness Examinations – history and physical, discuss preventive care options with owners, respond to owners' questions and concerns
- Dental Cases – participate in dental cleaning, assist with extractions, dental radiology
- Emergency Care – assist with trauma cases, work evening or weekend call cases
Student Supervision
The student will have access to the veterinarians approximately 16 hours per day.
Housing
The practice provides housing, and reimbursement for living expenses and professional liability insurance through the AVMA/PLIT Student Program.
