Externs will be exposed to a variety of soft tissue and orthopedic surgical cases consisting of predominantly racehorses and sport horses. General anesthesia, lameness examinations, shockwave therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, platelet rich plasma intralesional injections, and selective medical procedures are just a few of the other services provided by the clinic. Diagnostic imaging modalities available include digital and computer radiography, digital ultrasonography, resting video endoscopy, and dynamic respiratory endoscopy. A laboratory is available on site for performing the following diagnostic tests: complete blood count, fibrinogen levels, serum biochemistry, blood gas, urinalysis, and cytological evaluation.
Journals, textbooks, and on-line data bases availabe for use. Externs are encouraged to participate in weekly rounds with the interns as well as the once a month continuing educations seminars for the technicians.
Externs are encouraged to assist the interns with daily inpatient care and procedures as deemed appropriate based on his/her level of experience. Externs should anticipate mainly an observatory experience at the clinic.
8 to 12 hours/day during the week 3 to 5 hours/day on weekends
