Elective Course - CVM 5764 - Advanced Equine Reproduction

Details

Informal lecture, handouts and reading assignments to review Endocrinology associated with the equine estrous cycle, pregnancy maintenance and lactation. Laboratory exercises will include diagnostic techniques utilized in breeding management (ultrasound, endometrial biopsy, cytology, culture, rectal palpation) as well as procedures such as artificial insemination and preparation and handling of chilled semen. Independent study on a problem or an area of itnerest would be encrouaged and supervised.

Educational Resources

  • a number of equine reproduction texts are kepts in conference room
  • additionally, articles will be supplied for some reading assignments
  • The Manual of Equine Reproduction is recommended as the basic text for the course

Responsibilities

  • assist with daily equine reproduction cases with clients in the mornings
  • participate daily in case discussions/rounds/lectures
  • spend most afternoons at the university horse farm with a clinician in labs
  • help with routine breeding procedures at the farm
  • participate in some ongoing research projects
  • care for in-house mares and stallions including weekends and holidays
  • be available for some emergency duty
  • prepare a paper and presentation on an equine reproduction topic of interest

Student Supervision

8-10 hours per day, 5 days per week in addition to some emergency and after-hours duty

Housing

The student is responsible for arranging housing.
