Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital is a 100% exotic animal practice located in the western suburbs of Chicago. Between 600-800 patients are seen monthly, of which 45% ore companion birds, 20% ferrets, 25% rabbits and rodents, and 10% reptiles. Zoo animals, raptors, and other wildlife are not normally seen.

Responsibilities
The degree of responsibilities is dependent upon the skill, expertise, and willingness to learn of each individual student. Much of the student's time will be spent in the examination room where he or she will observe interaction between the doctor, client, and patient and help with patient restraint as needed. Ultimately the student would be responsible for most in-house treatments and necropsies once these techniques are mastered to the practice's satisfaction.
Learning proper restraint of exotic companion animals is one of the most important techniques emphasized. Students assist in surgery only as needed. No instruments are required. The student should bring several laboratory coats or smocks and a name tag. The attire is casual. Skirts or dresses may be worn if they are a minimum of knee-length or longer and coordinated with the uniform top. Shorts and culottes or "skorts" whose lengths fall above the knee may NOT be worn. Jeans and open-toed shoes are not allowed.
Student Supervision
The student will be working with the supervising veterinarian throughout the day.
Housing
Not currently, but may be able to assist with making arrangements if necessary.
