Emergency and specialty hospital offering experience in small animal emergency and critical care, internal medicine, oncology, surgery, and rehabilitation. Typical externships will consist of 1 week of emergency experience and 1 week of specialty experience, though exclusive emergency, internal medicine or surgery externiships could be arranged. Students would be scheduled for 40 hours/week and would include some evening and weekend hours.

During a 2 week externship, the student will spend approximately half their time working with the emergency doctors seeing cases, formulating and facilitating work-ups and participating in daily rounds. They will spend the other half dividing their time between internal medicine and surgery and will have the opportunity to interact with clients, formulate and implement plans, assist in surgery or with diagnostic imaging or endoscopy.

We have a full in-house library as well as online access to VIN/PubMed. We have interactive rounds twice daily and students are invited to attend any local CE given at the hospital during their stay. We also have a full in-house laboratory, digital radiographs, CT scan, onsite blood bank, rehabilitation program, I131 and more.

Students will be expected to interact with clients (collecting histories, giving updates/visits), assist is diagnostic work-ups by helping with phlebotomy, imaging, scoping or scrubbing into surgery. Students may be required to help with daily treatment of in-house patients and discharges. Students will be expected to participate in rounds and come prepared to discuss their cases. Students are invited but not required to present a case report or disease discussion to the house officers.

Since the hospital is staffed 24 hours a day, regardless of the shift they are working, students will be directly supervised by the emergency doctor or specialist during their stay.
