Welcome Class of 2016
Dear Class of 2016:
Welcome to the College of Veterinary Medicine at the Ohio State University. We are delighted you have chosen to become a Buckeye. We are looking forward to you being on campus and continuing your journey to become a veterinarian. You are the best of the best, and we wish you well on this path.
To help you with your transition into veterinary school, we have a few programs in place. The first program is new student orientation, which is mandatory. The dates of new student orientations will be in August This event is an opportunity for you to get to know your classmates and become familiar with our college. All students are required to attend.
The second program is the "Big Sib" program. Every first year student will be matched up with a second year student that will serve as your "Big Sib." Your "Big Sib" will help guide you through the ups and downs of veterinary school and help you transition into this new phase of your life.
You will be receiving more detailed information about New Student Orientation as well as the "Big Sib" program in the near future. New Student Orientation will be August 15, 16, and 17. Immunization
The Center for Disease Control recommends that individuals participating in a medical or veterinary health care setting receive specific vaccinations. At the Ohio State University, all veterinary students are required to have their vaccination records on file with the Student Health Center. Please complete the Animal Handling form as well as the Immunization Record form that are listed below.
***It is not mandatory to complete the Immunization Record Form. The rabies vaccine series is to be completed by the end of your first year. There is currently a temporary shortage of rabies vaccine. This means the rabies vaccine will only be given to those who have an animal bite or some other possible exposure to rabies. The rabies shortage should be over by Fall Quarter. We should be able to provide the pre-exposure vaccine on schedule in the Winter or Spring.
The PPD, a current tetanus/diphtheria are to be updated by the end of fall quarter. We should be able to provide the pre-exposure vaccine on schedule in the Winter or Spring.
***Please note: The Animal Handling Form requires you to list the animal groups with which you expect to be in contact. This list of animals will include: rats, mice, rabbits, other small laboratory animals, dogs, cats, cattle, sheep goats, swine, other livestock.

We have received some updated information on residency rules due to the change to semesters in Fall 2012. Please carefully read the information below.
NOTE ON OHIO RESIDENCY STATUS FOR STUDENTS IN THE TRANSITION YEAR: This issue has recently come to our attention, and will affect out-of-state students (and particularly graduate and professional students) who begin at OSU in 2011 and hope to establish Ohio residency in 2012, the first year of our transition to semesters:
One implication of the change to semesters is in the residency status of students who, after one full year of living in Ohio and being self-sufficient (no money coming in from out of state), are eligible for Ohio residency (in-state tuition) per ORC 3333-1-10. When we switch to semesters in 2012, the students who are returning for their second year who normally would have been eligible for Ohio residency may find themselves one month short of residence eligibility. Those students who moved in Ohio in September 2011 will not be eligible in the Fall Semester of 2012 because it begins in August i.e. only eleven months (Residency is determined by one's status at the beginning of the term, not the end.
With this statement, a student would need to have established domicile by August 22, 2011 (this year) to be eligible to apply next year.
For more information call the Student Consolidated Services Center at (614) 292-0300 or go to www.ureg.ohio-state.edu, under "Quick Links" select residency.
