College of Veterinary Medicine

Intensive experience at high volume spay/neuter clinic in a non-profit humane society in Tucson, Arizona. Duties include spay/neuter and other soft tissue surgery such as eye enucleations and limb amputations as need arises. Student will work under direct supervision with attending HSSA veterinarian in surgery suite. Opportunity for participating in shelter rounds and learning about shelter medicine also exists per interest by student.

Emphasis on hands on spay-neuter and other soft tissue surgery. Student can expect to achieve up to at least 50 surgeries in two weeks time if willing and able.

• Dr. Neal is currently President of AzVMA and sits on the Board of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians.
• Dr. Wilcox is a DVM with a PHD in Biology. We host interns from local referral hospital on a weekly basis as part of their internship experience and have received doznes of students, vets, and externs over the yeasr seeking hands-on training.

Student must come on time and be willing to tolerate long days in surgery suite. We expect a respectful and mature attitude toward staff and animals at our Humane Society. We prefer fourth year students as they seem to get more benefit out of our hands-on approach and come to us already having learned some basic surgical skills.

40-50 hours a week. Student will always accompany a staff veterinarian in surgery or in rounds. Our surgical suite is set up for high capacity, so student can do surgeries on shelter anaimls while HSSA vet works at other surgery tables and is available to assist as needed.
