Mixed animal solo practitioner practice in a rural setting with an experience of real life day to day general practice. Animals routinely treated in this practice include dogs, cats, horses, llamas, alpacas and occasionally sheep and goats.
This is a mixed animal practice with a solo practitioner in a rural setting. You will experience what real life day to day general practice is like in a solo practice. You will experience not only treating animals but also experience the aspects of practice management that a solo practitioner in a small rural practice takes on. Animals routinely treated in this practice include dogs, cats, horses, llamas, alpacas and occasionally sheep and goats.
An experienced relief veterinarian (DVM, PhD) is employed during the busy spring and summer months to help with some of the small animal case load. This veterinarian may also be available for supervision and education depending on what time of year it is.
Journals, veterinary text books, one on one case reviews
Students are expected to participate in all scheduled calls and appointments daily. Students are also expected to be available for after hours emergency calls for the duration of the elective. Students are expected to keep a log of appointments including case details which will be discussed on a case by case basis at the end of each work day. Students are expected to help with hospitalized animal care and treatment. Students will be expected to interact with clients in a positive and professional manner. Students are also expected to interact with support staff and veterinarians in a positive, helpful, inquisitive and professional manner. At times students will be able to assist with procedures and at other times they will only be able to observe. This will be on a case by case basis based on the clients consent and the judgement of the supervising veterinarian.
The student will be under the direct supervision of the veterinarian during our work day, five days a week. The student will not be expected to, asked to or be required to perform any procedures without the direct supervision of the veterinarian. The veterinarian will be available at least 8 hours per day, five days a week for direct access to the student.
