Description To provide a formal, structured preceptorship program for veterinary college students who have completed their third year of training. Professional veterinary students who have demonstrated interest and ability in zoo and wildlife medicine may apply. Preceptorships are offered on a periodic basis from four to eight weeks to expose the student to areas of zoological medicine more appropriately taught outside the veterinary college: clinical medicine and surgery, gross pathology, preventive medicine in a large, diverse zoological park.

Description This preceptorship offers exposure to clinical zoo and aquarium veterinary practice at a large metropolitan zoo with extensive avian, reptilian, and ungulate collections. The student will work closely with the veterinary staff (includes 3 veterinarians, 4 veterinary technicians) and keeper staff, and will receive an introduction to husbandry, restraint/immobilization, basic medical procedure techniques, and necropsies of exotic animals, the unique aspects of veterinary management of animals in a zoo setting, and MedARKS.

Description The Indianapolis Zoo Veterinary Department offers a 4 - 8 week externship opportunity for 4th year veterinary students. The Indianapolis Zoo refers to these experiences as Internships. A maximum of 6 students will be accepted annually. The student will spend a minimum of 40 hours per week at the zoo, observing and assisting the staff veterinarians with all aspects of clinical work including treatments, immobilizations, necropsies, lab work, radiology, surgery and animal records.

Description The Lindsay Wildlife Museum has excellent veterinary medical facilities. The medical records for the wildlife hospital are computerized. Paper and computer charts are maintained for the animals of the Live Collection and Pet Education. The Lindsay Wildlife Museum is highly regarded in the captive animal field because of the extraordinary enrichment that is provided for our captive wild animals. Such an experience will be valuable for any veterinarians wishing to work with exotic species.

Description Students will participate in all procedures, draw blood and take other diagnostic samples, learn how to restrain and medicate a variety of different animals. They will also participate in chemical immobilizations for larger species. Students will assist the veterinarian or veterinary intern with all medical procedures for the day. They may be responsible for routine medications of some hospitalized animals. Students will complete either a small research project or present a subject or interest or need during the block.

Description This preceptorship is structured according to preceptorship guidelines proposed by the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians. The purpose of our preceptorship program is to expose students to facets of zoological medicine that are most appropriately taught outside the veterinary school, enriching the education of students actively interested in pursuing zoological medicine as a career.

Description The Philadelphia Zoo's Department of Animal Health staff includes three full time clinical veterinarians and three full time animal health technicians. The Philadelphia Zoo also boasts a full time nutrition department within the Department of Animal Services.

Type of Experience: Four- to six-week clinical veterinary medicine externship rotation.

Description During the externship (2-6 weeks), students will participate in all aspects of the veterinary department's activities, including routine, emergency, and preventative health care of the animal collection, maintaining health records, assisting the veterinary technicians with routine tests, and assisting in the care of hospitalized animals. Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari Park is a 4.5 mile drive-through safari that is home to over 1200 animals representing over 55 species including many hoofstock, carnivores, reptiles, and marine mammals.

Description Experience: This is an opportunity for senior veterinary students to learn about the principles and practice of zoo animal medicine and surgery.

Description We offer 4-8 week externships to fourth year veterinary students. Complete immersion in zoological medicine (medical, surgical, dental, preventative medicine care of amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, fish; post-mortem exams, nutrition, exhibit design). The facility includes the following equipment; X-ray machines, endoscopes, ultrasound, dental machine, microscopes, electro-surgery, do all avian/reptile hematology in-house. Emergencies are usually limited to business hours but days can be long.
