Description This preceptorship offers exposure to clinical zoo and aquarium veterinary practice at a large metropolitan zoo with extensive avian, reptilian, and ungulate collections. The student will work closely with the veterinary staff (includes 3 veterinarians, 4 veterinary technicians) and keeper staff, and will receive an introduction to husbandry, restraint/immobilization, basic medical procedure techniques, and necropsies of exotic animals, the unique aspects of veterinary management of animals in a zoo setting, and MedARKS.

Description The student's duties will include assisting staff veterinarians and technicians as needed with clinical care and pathology. The student will gain skills related to hematology/cytology, anesthesia, radiology, internal medicine, pathology and surgery. This program is clinically based and the case load is variable.

A maximum of 6 students will be accepted annually. The student will spend a minimum of 40 hours per week at the zoo, observing and assisting the staff veterinarians with all aspects of clinical work including treatments, immobilizations, necropsies, lab work, radiology, surgery and animal records.

Description The Louisville Zoological Garden opened on a full-time bases in 1969. Its collection consists of approximately 292 species of animals housed on more than 70 acres. The zoo is active in conservation projects including captive propagation of the Black-footed ferret. A staff veterinarian, associate veterinarian, hospital supervisor/LVT, veterinary technician, and hospital keeper staff the Zoo's hospital.

Description Students will participate in all procedures, draw blood and take other diagnostic samples, learn how to restrain and medicate a variety of different animals. Description Taronga Zoo is one of two zoos managed by the Taronga Conservation Society Australia (TCSA), the other being Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Taronga Zoo has a large collection of both native and exotic mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. The Zoo has a well established veterinary hospital and quarantine centre (Taronga Wildlife Hospital) which is responsible for the health and welfare of the Zoo's animal collection. There is a strong emphasis on preventative medicine.

Description We offer 4-8 week externships to fourth year veterinary students. Complete immersion in zoological medicine (medical, surgical, dental, preventative medicine care of amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, fish; post-mortem exams, nutrition, exhibit design). The facility includes the following equipment; X-ray machines, endoscopes, ultrasound, dental machine, microscopes, electro-surgery, do all avian/reptile hematology in-house. Emergencies are usually limited to business hours but days can be long.
