If you choose not to work at any of the pre-approved sites, please find your own elective location and submit a request for approval through The College of Veterinary Medicine.

Lindsay Wildlife Museum

Description The Lindsay Wildlife Museum has excellent veterinary medical facilities. The medical records for the wildlife hospital are computerized. Paper and computer charts are maintained for the animals of the Live Collection and Pet Education. The Lindsay Wildlife Museum is highly regarded in the captive animal field because of the extraordinary enrichment that is provided for our captive wild animals. Such an experience will be valuable for any veterinarians wishing to work with exotic species.

Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari Park

Description During the externship (2-6 weeks), students will participate in all aspects of the veterinary department's activities, including routine, emergency, and preventative health care of the animal collection, maintaining health records, assisting the veterinary technicians with routine tests, and assisting in the care of hospitalized animals. Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari Park is a 4.5 mile drive-through safari that is home to over 1200 animals representing over 55 species including many hoofstock, carnivores, reptiles, and marine mammals.

Taronga Wildlife Hospital

Description Taronga Zoo is one of two zoos managed by the Taronga Conservation Society Australia (TCSA), the other being Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Taronga Zoo has a large collection of both native and exotic mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. The Zoo has a well established veterinary hospital and quarantine centre (Taronga Wildlife Hospital) which is responsible for the health and welfare of the Zoo's animal collection. There is a strong emphasis on preventative medicine.

Description The Wildlife Center of Virginia is a non-profit hospital for native wildlife located in Waynesboro in the Shenandoah Valley . Over 2500 injured and orphaned wild mammals, birds and reptiles are treated yearly at the Center. The 5700 square foot state of the art hospital is fully equipped with gas anesthesia, endoscopy, radiographic equipment, laboratory facilities, inside and outside holding areas, and flight cages.
