Neurology and Neurosurgery Elective

If you are interested, during your 4th year off-site elective experience, we provide a list of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine's previously approved locations.

If you choose not to work at any of the pre-approved sites, please find your own elective location and submit a request for approval through The College of Veterinary Medicine.

Description The student will have the opportunity to see a broad variety of small animal cases with central and peripheral neurological diseases and be involved with all aspects of case management. Neurodiagnostic tests such as cerebrospinal fluid collection, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography and electrodiagnostics will also be part of our clinical routine.

Description The rotation is designed to provide exposure to the medical and surgical management of neurological disease in dogs and cats. Description The Neurology/Neurosurgery Service sees approximately 1200 referral cases a year. At that number, approximately 350-400 are admitted for extensive evaluation and definitive treatment or surgery. Student will be treated like an intern and will be assisted with cases she sees/admits. Student will be closely supervised and guided; will be expected to read and to be prepared to engage in substantive discussions about all cases. Details We have a linear accelerator, spiral CT, doppler flow ultrasound & MRI on our hospital grounds.

Description The students will rotate through our neurology/neurosurgery practice and assist the attending neurologist. The main goals are to be able to perform a good neurological exam and determine a neuroanatomical localization and differential list for each patient. Other goals include learning the basics of our most common imaging techniques (radiographs, myelogram, CT, MRI) and surgeries. We will also have neurology topic rounds/discussions 3-4 times weekly for the most common neurological conditions.
