If you are interested, during your 4th year off-site elective experience, we provide a list of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine's previously approved locations.

If you choose not to work at any of the pre-approved sites, please find your own elective location and submit a request for approval through The College of Veterinary Medicine.

Bonsall, CA

Description San Luis Rey Equine Hospital offers 2-4 week externship rotations. On site housing is provided when available. Externs participate in rounds, assist in case work-up, journal club, and observe in all surgeries. They are present for the work-up of all emergency cases and gain a vast array of experience in medicine, surgery and anesthesia.

Chagrin Falls, OH

Description The student will ride with and assist the ambulatory vet on farm calls and at the racetracks on Thistledown and Northfield. They will also assist on any emergencies. Description Medical and surgical referrals and emergencies comprise a large portion of the caseload, in addition to a large number of lameness exams, purchase exams, and other elective procedures. The practice performs approximately 250 to 300 surgeries per year, split almost equally between emergency and elective procedures. Emergency surgery cases include a large number of colic surgeries as well as lacerations, joint lavage/exploration, tendon sheath lavage/exploration, etc.

Description Each spring the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine offers a two week elective in Large Animal Neonatology and Intensive Care Medicine at the New Bolton Center campus.  This clinical elective is open to veterinary students who have completed their preclinical training and who have a special interest in equine neonatology/perinatology and/or intensive care medicine.

Description Students will be involved in the day-to-day care of inpatients as well as experience the high quality referral care we provide to our clients. Caseload involves both surgical and medical elective cases, lameness examinations, intensive care patients and neonatal intensive care patients. Students will be able to assist in acquiring digital radiographs, digital ultrasound examinations, thorough lameness examinations, upper airway endoscopy, emergency patient acquisition and care and neonatal intensive care.

Description The Wisconsin Equine Clinic, Inc. is a multiple doctor, full service, ambulatory, medical, surgical, and reproduction equine hospital that serves as a referral center for the Midwest. The staff includes a surgeon, a board certified internal medicine specialist, a board-certified theriogenologist, and a veterinarian trained in acupuncture and ophthalmology.
