Description
Dogs & Cats Veterinary Referral and Emergency has an externship program that would be a great learning opportunity. We are a referral and emergency center located in Bowie, MD (a Washington, DC suburb). We are housed in a newly renovated 12,000 square foot building with the most technologically advanced equipment, including digital radiography, a spiral CT, fluoroscopy, 2 state of the art ultrasound machines, ECG telemetry system, ability to monitor COP, and a rehabilitation facility. Our services include Cardiology, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Surgery, Internal Medicine/Oncology, and Emergency. We receive a steady volume of cases including emergencies through our emergency clinic.
Externs can spend from 1-3 weeks at our hospital. Externs typically spend time on each service although this is very flexible. Externs will be closely involved in working up cases and managing ICU cases. Housing can be provided if necessary. No stipend is provided.

Associate Veterinarians and special expertise available
Our staff includes two board certified internists, one board certified neurologist, one board certified cardiologist, one board certified surgeon, two senior emergency doctors, four interns, and many highly qualified and certified technicians.
Educational Resources
We have twice weekly rounds with our interns - one day a week we rotate between Journal Club, Morbidity/Mortality rounds, topic rounds, and radiology rounds. One morning a week the interns spend with one of our senior doctors discussing cases in depth. We have a large resource of textbooks and journals.
Responsibilities
- Externs are expected to interact closely with the doctors.
- They are expected to assist in creating a diagnostic and treatment plan for patients along with helping in management of our ICU cases.
- They can closely observe and some times participate in procedures.
- Externs are expected to participate in the twice weekly rounds that occur with our interns.
Student Supervision
Externs will be working approximately 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. This varies depending on the service and what is going on. They will be supervised by a senior doctor this entire time.
