The goal of this externship is to provide a highly motivated individual with in-depth exposure to a high-quality equine practice with an emphasis on sport horse medicine, pleasure horse practice, general internal medicine, reproduction, and perinatology.
Externs will observe and assist staff veterinarians on ambulatory calls and in the clinic during the work up of medicine, lameness, prepurchase and elective surgery cases. Externs will also assist with after hours treatments, observations and emergencies.
To provide the extern with exposure to a busy equine practice with an emphasis on sport horse medicine and pleasure horse practice throughout the year and reproduction and neonatology during the foaling and breeding season. Externs will have an opportunity to accompany vets on ambulatory calls and to observe in-depth lameness and prepurchase examinations in the clinic where diagnostic imaging services include digital radiography, nuclear scintigraphy and ultrasonography. During foal season externs can participate in the work up and treatment of newborn foals and mares with high risk pregnancies.
Students will have direct access to veterinarians and staff at all times while participating in the externship. Responsibilities during regular working hours will be supervised by staff veterinarians and technicians. After hours responsibilities will be supervised buy the on call veterinarian and the two veterinary interns.
