College of Veterinary Medicine

Externs learn about federal legislative and regulatory processes and are actively involved in advancing the AVMA's agenda in Washington. Externs work first-hand on issues that affect the veterinary profession, such as the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program, animal welfare, funding for veterinary education, and small business and tax issues. As part of that process, Externs work with Members of Congress and Congressional Staffers.

Externs are expected to represent the AVMA while working with Congressional Members, their staff, allied stakeholders, and Executive branch agencies. Externs learn the issues facing the veterinary profession and actively work to advance the AVMA's agenda. Externs are expected to think clearly and stay focused under pressure, be result-oriented, with a high drive to meet goals, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and relate well to people from diverse backgrounds in varied social settings.

Externs will have direct and free access to veterinarians at least 8 hours a day, and by phone or email outside of normal office hours.
