We offer a challenging, exciting externship with an opportunity for professional growth. Our externships provide an outstanding opportunity to gain exposure to complex referral cases, emergency and critical care medicine, or high-quality general practice.
Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service (VSES) is a 14,000 square foot state of the art facility that houses both a multi-specialty and a 24 hour emergency/critical care hospital and an in-house, full-service laboratory. We utilize the latest diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, including flexible endoscopy, ultrasound, color-flow Doppler echocardiography, MRI and radioactive iodine. Through collaborative efforts with local medical facilities we also have access to CT (helical) and radiation therapy services. A full range of orthopedic, soft tissue, neurologic and ophthalmic surgeries are performed daily, including minimally invasive surgical procedures, TPLO, TTA, total hip arthroplasty, reconstructive surgery and phacoemulsification. Rehabilitation therapy services, including underwater and dry treadmills, therapeutic ultrasound, neuromuscular electrostimulation, laser therapy and other physical intervention modalities are available either on-site or at the Animal Rehabilitation Center of Rochester. Our practice group also includes a feline and small animal practice, a housecalls practice and a general practitioner certified in acupuncture and herbal medicine.
Our staff of specialists includes 1 cardiologist, 1 internist, 1 ophthalmologist, 3 surgeons and 2 certified canine rehabilitation therapists. The emergency/critical care service is staffed by 1 ABVP boarded and 4 internship-trained attending DVMs with extensive experience in urgent critical care. Our nursing staff includes ECC, ophthalmology and anesthesia certified licensed veterinary technicians. We also have several rotating interns and a surgical intern.
Externs can specify a discipline within which they would like to spend their time, or rotate through all the services. For each specialty rotation you will have direct supervision from a specialist. Emergency/Critical Care rotations are divided into day and over-night shifts. During this rotation you will have primary case exposure with direct mentorship from an attending DVM.
General practice externships are also available. The Animal Hospital of Pittsford, the flagship hospital of Monroe Veterinary Associates, occupies a 14,000 square foot facility and hosts the general practice portion of the externship. Experience at this hospital provides exposure to the operations of a progressive general practice, under the supervision of high quality general practitioners. There are thirteen other general practices in our group, ranging in size from one to 5 doctors where externships are also available.
To complete your educational opportunities you will be expected to attend and actively participate in daily clinical case-based, journal review, and didactic rounds. As time permits you are encouraged to attend continuing education lectures sponsored by local and regional organizations.
These educational opportunities, combined with your broad clinical exposure are designed to prepare you for application for an internship or a fast-paced, advanced private practice or emergency hospital.
We support enthusiastic, self-motivated externs who are interested in advancing their education and case management skills in a team-oriented environment. Rochester is located in Western New York. It offers one of the broadest ranges of cultural, sporting and recreational activities of any comparable sized city in the United States. Many of our interns have stayed in Rochester to join our group, which we believe is a testament to the desirability of living in this community, and the esteem in which our group of practices is held.
Externships can be arranged in 1 to 5 week time periods. Interested parties should contact Amy Laukaitis at 585-271-2733, ext. 27.
