Description Experience:

Not every veterinary student envisions clinical practice as the goal of attending veterinary school. Some students hope to teach, some to do research and some to work for a large corporation. Still others see themselves serving their fellow veterinarians in some leadership capacity. The American Veterinary Medical Association has a Headquarters externship program for students who would like to explore opportunities for careers outside clinical practice.

March 15, 2013 is the deadline for applications for 2012 AVMA Headquarters Externship. Information and application available at:

http://www.avma.org/savma/services.asp#avma-extern

Institutional Resources:

There are approximately 30 veterinarians who work as full-time staff for the AVMA, coming from myriad backgrounds including public health, academia, industry, research, and clinical practice. Many staff veterinarians have advanced degrees (for example, Ph.D., M.S., M.B.A.) and specialty board certification (for example, ACVPM).

Educational Resources Available:

The AVMA has an extensive library on site. Externs would have full access to more than 50 journals and many other resources including books and research databases.

Responsibilities Expected of Participating Students:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills will be a major asset for the student extern. This work may include assisting in document and/or letter writing, developing content for the AVMA web site, participation in council/committee meetings held at AVMA Headquarters or elsewhere, providing information to AVMA members, performing background research and collecting data on current veterinary issues.

Student Supervision:

Approximately 40 hrs/week.
