Dr. Schuenemann receives USDA-NIFA grant

Dr. Gustavo Schuenemann and his collaborators, along with Texas A&M and other universities, were recently awarded a grant from the USDA-NIFA for $3 million. Dr Schuenemann, Dairy Extension Veterinarian and assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, received $344,000 for his portion of the project titled “Genomic Selection for Improved Fertility of Dairy Cows with Emphasis on Cyclicity and Pregnancy”. We would like to congratulate Dr. Schuenemann on this research accomplishment!

Distinguished Staff Awards

This year’s Distinguished Staff Awards were presented at the College Appreciation luncheon on July 31. The awards recognize staff members who have had five years of continuous service for exceptional accomplishments, leadership, and service to the college community. This year’s awards went to Kathleen Hayes-Ozello, Ann Sanders, Lorri Noce, and April Pugh. Congratulations!

Ohio State Veterinary Medical Center to Open 24/7 Companion Animal Emergency and Referral/Specialty Satellite Hospital

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine is announcing plans to open The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) in Dublin. The new facility, which will be a 24-hour companion animal emergency and referral/specialty hospital, is projected to open in spring 2013. The 10,000 square-foot-facility will be located at 5020 Bradenton Ave. in Dublin.

Tips on avoiding heat stroke and a trip to the emergency room

Summer is in full swing and heat waves are starting to take their toll on humans and animals alike. During periods of extreme heat, taking your dog jogging or running errands can result in heat stroke, turning a normal outing into a crisis situation. Unlike humans, dogs do not possess sweat glands and their fur naturally traps heat. Panting is their main method of cooling down, but excessive panting, a natural reaction to overheating, can lead to further fluid loss and dehydration.

Resident and Intern Certificate Presentation and Awards Ceremony

On Friday June 29, the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and the Veterinary Medical Center held the 2012 Resident and Intern Certificate Presentation and Reception at the Ohio Union. This annual event, attended by over 170 people, is a celebration of the success and achievement of our residents and interns, and marks the culmination of one phase of their careers.

Veterinary student receives Board of Trustees Student Recognition Award

The Ohio State University Board of Trustees awarded Katie Zatroch, Class of 2013, with one of this year’s Student Recognition Awards for her outstanding leadership and dedication to both the veterinary profession and the university.

College faculty member receives College of Public Health teaching award

Dr. Armando Hoet, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and assistant clinical professor in the Division of Epidemiology at the College of Public Health, received the College of Public Health 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award.

According to one nominator, Dr. Hoet “has developed the second largest Veterinary Public Health program in the U.S., second only to the program at the University of Minnesota.”

Veterinary Public Health Club educates community and wins award at Open House event

Ohio State’s Veterinary Public Health (VPH) Club won best student club presentation at this year’s American Association of Public Health Veterinarians (AAPHV) open house event. More than 3,000 members of the community were in attendance and participated in the club’s activities.

Veterinary student receives prestigious scholarship for second year in a row

Senior veterinary student Amanda Sherman will receive the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) Harold D. Wetterberg Foundation Veterinary Medicine Scholarship for the second year in a row.
