Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students:
Congratulations to April Pugh and everyone in the Office of Student Affairs who worked to make the second annual Buckeye Vet Prep Academy such a big success. We welcomed 56 high school students from across the country for hands-on activities, tours and shadowing during the week-long camp. This is the first time students have stayed in campus dorms during their week. This is a great program and I want to acknowledge April’s role in developing the camp, and encouraging such a diverse group of students to consider careers in veterinary medicine.
Summer programs for our current students are also going well. The Summer Research Program – again coordinated by Michele Morscher – includes 27 students. They are working on a broad range of research projects from testing methods to improve surgery outcomes to participating in field work in Africa. Students are also participating in the new Graduate Minor in Business in the Health Sciences. This is a two-year program of summer classes at the Fisher College of Business. For the cohort starting summer of 2014, 21 students enrolled: 16 veterinary students, four from the College of Medicine and one from pharmacy. The first group, which began their coursework in the summer of 2013 included 20 students: 17 from veterinary medicine, two from nursing, and one graduate research student.
I’m sure you’ve read about the recent Ohio State Board of Trustees approval for the first phase of the Enhancement and Expansion of the VMC. This is great news and will allow us to break ground this summer. The Office of Advancement is planning an official groundbreaking ceremony for Friday, September 5. Everyone in the college will be invited to participate, and formal invitations will be sent to our donors and select clients. New Ohio State President Michael Drake is also invited.
Thanks to everyone involved in our summer series of budget discussion meetings, “Charting our future together.” I appreciate the time spent by our leadership team in preparation for these sessions. I also appreciate the time spent by each of you in attendance during the sessions learning the details of our budget and asking great questions. As you know, the information also is available on our intranet, CVM Community, which is accessible from vet.osu.edu. You must log in with your name.#. Look for the “Group” Office of the Associate Executive Dean, and click on Blogs. The next session, will be Wednesday July 23 at 3:30 in the VMC Auditorium.
Campus Updates and Partnerships
Today is President Michael Drake’s second day! I attended a luncheon today with the other Deans, to welcome President Drake and learn about his vision for Ohio State. If you are on Twitter, watch for #osunewprez. The university is soliciting advice for him, and you can participate by tweeting your advice. What does President Drake need to know about being a Buckeye? Our OSUVeterinaryCollege Twitter message was: Hey #OSUnewprez! plan to visit us and learn about our VMC expansion, #CTO and #onehealth! vet.osu.edu If you are on Twitter, I hope you will follow us. We tweet news about animal issues and diseases, as well as college events and stories.
As a reminder, today is the day that all remaining documents with the old (block) logo should be discarded. If you have brochures or fliers that need to be replaced, please work with Marc Hardman, Tim Vojt and Melissa Weber to incorporate the new branding guidelines put in place by the office of University Communications. You can also ready the guidelines at brand.osu.edu, and contact Melissa with any additional questions.
Alumni and Fundraising
The annual Alumni Golf Outing was last week. The Ohio State Scarlet Course was full with 144 participants, and all the money raised went to support the Alumni Scholarship Fund. Thanks to Bonnie Bates and Lauren Lammers in our Advancement Office as well as Dr. Jim Estep, alumnus and Alumni Society Board Member, for coordinating this event. Extra events, such as the sale of “Mulligans” brought in an additional $2,500 during the day.
The VMC is participating in numerous events this summer. Ohio State Fair: Dr. Andy Niehaus will present a brief talk in the Ohio Farm Bureau’s Agriculture and Horticulture Building on Sunday, July 27. The college will be distributing information to fairgoers with the College of Food Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Channel 10 Health and Fitness Expo: Melissa Weber will be seeking volunteers to support a booth during the expo on Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17. WagFest! We will again participating in this great event in support of dogs and their families on Saturday, August 23. Contact Jeannette Schmidt with questions about participating at WagFest.
