Welcome to the August 2009 Special Alumni Reunion Weekend edition of Connect to Veterinary Medicine, the latest news and information from the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University.
Register by August 28 for Alumni Reunion Weekend
The last day to register for Alumni Reunion Weekend without a $20 late fee is August 28. Late registration will be accepted through September 4. After September 4, you will need to call 1-800-762-5646 and pay by credit card. There is a $20 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given after September 4.
The CE conference is open to all veterinarians and technicians - you do not have to be a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine to attend. The conference is four hours of CE credit, and will include multiple lectures from expert faculty in the college who will cover emerging topics in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery, and Equine Medicine and Surgery from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with lunch from 12 to 1 p.m., and special sessions from 1 to 3 p.m.
Dr. Lonnie King, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine as of September 1, will offer a special talk during Alumni Reunion Weekend as part of the continuing education program on September 11 called "Infectious Diseases and One Health." Find out more on our web site. You must be a paid registrant of the conference to attend this session.
As part of the continuing education lectures, Dr. Dean Richardson, class of 1979, Charles W. Raker professor of equine surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, New Bolton Center, will be giving the keynote address, "The Barbaro Story." His presentation will focus on his experiences while treating the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner. All alumni and friends of the college are welcome to attend the keynote address. Parking for the keynote presentation is free in the lot east of the Veterinary Medical Center, in any A, B, or C spot. You must be a paid registrant of the conference to receive continuing education credits.

Following the continuing education sessions at the college from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., alumni and friends of the college are invited to the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café. Class reunions will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m., a reception with silent auction bidding will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with the buffet, band and cheerleaders, Alumni Society awards presentation, and the auctions to follow.*
Attire for the entire weekend is Buckeye casual.
Alumni Society Recognition Awards
The Alumni Recognition Awards acknowledge and honor College of Veterinary Medicine alumni who have shown distinction through their professional activities and dedication, and through the contribution of their time and efforts for the advancement of the veterinary medical profession.
This year the society will recognize, Dr. William DeHoff, Class of 1964, Dr. Susan Monger, Class of 1986, and Dr. Robert Sherding, Class of 1973, with the Alumni Recognition Award. Dr. Vernon Carter and Dr. Dean Richardson, Class of 1979, will receive the President's Award. Mr. Bob Peterson and Mr. Bruce Peterson will receive the Distinguished Friend of the College Award.

Donations for the live and silent auctions are still being accepted. Please notify us by August 31 if you plan to donate so that we can place that information on our web site and reserve space at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café. The money raised during Alumni Reunion Weekend Auctions allows us to give back to the college. We count on dedicated alumni such as you to contribute items for the auctions, and past donations have included iPods, weekend getaways, unique artwork and Buckeye-themed merchandise.

On Saturday, September 12, we will host the Alumni Society Annual Membership and Board Meeting starting at 2 p.m. Dean King will discuss the "Future of Ohio State Veterinary Medicine" at 4 p.m. and the tailgate will run from 5 to 7:30 p.m., with kickoff at 8 p.m. for the Ohio State vs. USC football game - attire for the weekend is Buckeye casual.
The Ohio State Alumni Association will be hosting tours on Friday and a brunch on Sunday.
The Alumni Association is providing information regarding Columbus hotels and construction to ensure the weekend goes smoothly. Thanks to those who participated in the Ohio State vs. USC football ticket lottery. We were able to accommodate all reunion class members who requested tickets and also had a small number of tickets for additional classes.
