Dropbox folders must have a name.
Enter "Dissection Lab" in the Name field.
You will see a notation under the Name field stating the folder you are about to create will reside in the Lab Group Submission folder within the Dropbox.
Note: The Dropbox may have one or more folders for submission of student assignments.
Note: Fields marked with a red asterisk () are required.
Note: Detailed instructions for creating a Dropbox can be found in the Dropbox Quick Lesson.
The Dropbox can be categorized if multiple folders are required for student assignments.
You might want to have categories for groups work, individual work, practice assignments etc.
If Dropbox categories had previously been created for other purposes, you could select the category for this group Dropbox from the Category dropdown box.
Categories can be helpful for sorting of Dropbox folders.
For the purpose of this lesson we will assume no prior Dropbox categories had been created.
Click the New Category link.
Enter "Group Assignments" in the Name field of the New Dropbox Category pop-up windows.
Once you have saved the Dropbox category name you will be returned to the Create Dropbox Folders screen.
You will see "Group Assignments" in the Category dropdown menu.
Dropbox submissions can be automatically graded when a student submits a file to the Dropbox.
The Grade Item and Out Of fields relate to the automatic grading of a Dropbox submission.
Note: Typically you would not want to automatically grade the Dropbox submission until you have had a chance to look at the information submitted. Assigning a "Grade Item" and "Out Of" score to the Dropbox will automatically give the student the the "Out Of" total for anything submitted to the Dropbox. It is better to not automatically grade a Dropbox submission and enter a grade directly to the Grade Book after the submission has been reviewed.
For the purpose of this lesson we will not assign an automatic Grade Item or Out Of score to this Dropbox folder.
Add Custom Instructions to the Dropbox folder to give students additional information regarding the purpose of the Dropbox folder.
Note: Enable text formatting features by clicking the pencil () icon and utilizing the Basic and Advanced tabs.
Enter "Use the Dissection Lab folder for submission of your final assignment for the dissection laboratory" into the Custom Instructions box.
You may also add detailed instructions as Attached Files to the Dropbox folder.
Students would be able to download this file to their computer
Note: Adding Attached Files as additional instructions to the Dropbox may confuse students as they are submitting their own work.
You may also add additional restricted Dropbox folders if you created multiple group categories previously.
This is beneficial if students will be assigned to multiple groups for submission of group work.
For the purpose of this lesson we will create an additional group dropbox folder.
Click the Add Another link to create an additional group dropbox folder.
Enter a folder Name: "Final Group Project", select a folder Category: "Group Assignments", enter Custom Instructions for students: "Use the Final Group Project folder for submission of your final group project."
Refer to the previous example for instructions.
Click Create when you have finished entering the new folder information.
Upon creating you will be returned to the Workspace Summary where you can verify your Additional Options have been created correctly.
Click Done to complete the process.
View your choices for group work.
Make one last verification that the group Discussion Board has been assigned to the correct groups.
Click the Edit Discussion Restrictions link.
Note: Detailed instructions for creating Discussion Boards is available in the Quick Discussion Boards lesson.
You will see Dissection Lab listed as the Forum under Forums and Topics. This should not be restricted.
Note: Restricting the discussion Forum will not allow students to see the Forum.
Verify the total number of group topics (numbered individually for each group created) exist.
Each topic should have an icon beside it denoting it is a group topic.
Verify each group topic is restricted to the appropriate group.
The checkbox for each group should correspond to the appropriate group topic on the left.
If you make any changes make sure you click Save.
If no changes are needed click Go Back to return to the previous screen.
|Click the Category List () link to return to the listing of group categories.|
The Category List will now show the effect of your group configuration.
You are now ready to begin enrolling students in the individual groups for the Dissection Lab.
Note: You might want to take a break at this point. We are approximately half-way through the group setup.
Ready? Let's begin enrolling students in groups!
