Copy a Discussion Forum

Carmen :Quick Discussions

This section of the lesson will show you how to copy a Forum and its associated topics to a new Forum with associated topics without having to go through all the steps as outlined on the Create a New Forum page and forward.

To bypass the previous steps (once you have already created your first Forum and Topics) you can copy an entire Forum and all its Topics to a new Forum and simply change the name. This saves quite a bit of time if you are creating multiple Forums with multiple Topics in each.

From the Forums & Topics List select the Copy option .

This will allow you to choose to copy either a Forum or a Topic to a new Forum or Topic.

Copy to a new forum or topic

After you have selected the Copy option, you will see two choices:

  1. Copy a Forum
    1. Copies an existing Forum and all Topics associated with it to a new Forum.
  2. Copy a Topic
    1. Copy an existing Topic in one Forum to another Forum or to multiple Forums.

For the purpose of this lesson we will select option one, Copy a Forum.

Copy an existing forum or topic to a new forum or topic
Select the Forum you want to copy, in its entirety, from the dropdown menu, Forum to Copy. Choose the forum you want to copy

Enter a name for the new Forum you want to create.

For the purpose of this lesson we will create an Ask the Professor Forum.

Check the Copy topics checkbox to include ALL Topics in the Forum you are copying.

Note: You would typically not copy the pinned messages from the existing Forum as you would typically want students to create new messages instead of replying to messages in the previous Forum.

Click the Copy botton at the bottom right of the screen to complete the process of copying the existing Forum and Topics to a new Forum.

Enter a name for the new forum

Once the Forum has copied you will be able to make edits to the Forum Description, posting Options, Availability, Locking Options and Restrictions.

Note: Copying an existing Forum and its associated Topics copies ALL associated settings. In most cases you will need to edit each of the above sections to remove or change any settings which pertained to the original Forum and Topics.

If necessary, please review how to:

Once you have completed entering/changing the Forum Description, posting Options, Availability, Locking Options and Restrictions (if necessary), click the Save button at the bottom right of the screen to save your changes.

Edit the forum description and special settings
Now you are ready to go back and edit the Topics that were copied from the original Forum or delete the Topics you do not want.
